SOUNDS OF THE NILE (SON)

SON is a multi-dimensional project encompassing film, music, and a festival movement that embarks on a captivating journey along the Nile River. This initiative unfolds the rich tapestry of history, traditions, and diverse sounds inherent to the major tribes dwelling along the course of the Nile. Commencing from its Source in Uganda, the exploration extends through West Nile, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Sudan, and culminates at the delta in Egypt. The primary objective of SON is to preserve, promote, develop, and jubilantly celebrate the profound African cultural heritage embedded within these communities.

SON Film:
The heart of SON lies in its 7-episode documentary film series, narrating the enthralling history of the Nile, the unique identity of each major tribe, and the intrinsic sounds echoing through these countries. The film captures the essence through interviews with indigenous cultural and spiritual leaders, chiefs, percussionists, and both young and elder indigenous music artists. Heritage sites are explored, and demonstrations of authentic indigenous sounds are documented, providing a visual odyssey into the deep cultural roots of these tribes. The SON film series aims to offer an immersive and authentic portrayal of the rich heritage carried by the tribes along the Nile.

SON Music:
Complementing the visual odyssey is the SON music project, a groundbreaking initiative crafting experimental futuristic music. Traditional percussion samples and vocals, laden with historical significance, are recorded during the film shoots from the tribes. These raw elements form the basis for a music residency, where local and international music producers, along with artists, collaborate to create a full-length album. This amalgamation of traditional sounds and urban influences results in a unique musical composition that pays homage to the indigenous roots while pushing the boundaries of contemporary expression.

The SON project serves as a harmonious fusion of history, visual storytelling, and experimental music, resonating with the pulsating heartbeat of the Nile and celebrating the vibrant cultural mosaic of the African tribes along its banks. Through film, music, and festivals, SON endeavors to amplify the voices of these communities, ensuring the preservation and appreciation of their cultural heritage for generations to come.
